What is the whole purpose behind unlocking an iPhone?

Iphone 3G unlocking questions?

  • I have an iPhone 3G, and Im currently on the AT&T plan that you have to get. I am in a situation where I have to cancel the plan on AT&T cause my parents are in a dispute over who pays the bill. So, the situation is the plan gets cancelled and I get a new phone with a different plan under the other parents name. But, then I remembered about unlocking. Unlocking an iPhone is basically making it work with other carriers. So if I unlock my iPhone, I can get a different plan on maybe a different carrier on my phone, and it will be under my other parents name. But I have some questions. If you cancel the AT&T two year contract plan, is it even possible to unlock it then? Or can you unlock it, then cancel the plan, and it will still be an unlocked iPhone? When its unlocked, how do you get a new plan on it? Do you walk into a Verizon store and say "hey, I have an unlocked iPhone. Can I get a SIM card from your carrier?" Howe is that done? If you unlock the phone, cancel your AT&T plan, and get a new one with, say, Verizon, will you or can you get the same number you had? Can you tell them what number you want? Can that happen? Cause I want my original number... I think I already asked this, but I'll rephrase it. Can't you just unlock the phone while on the AT&T plan, cancel that plan while its unlocked, then get a different plan from Verizon? Something like that. Please answer my questions in detail and with any more information as possible. I fully appreciate all answers. Thanks.

Not sure about unlocking while you have AT&T but I was looking at YouTube earlier today and I saw that you can unlock it to verizon but you have to do it your self you can't go to the verizon store. Don't think you're going to able to keep your same phone number:( oh and I read that if you updaTe your iPhone while it's unlocked iTunes is going to detect hat it's unlocked and will make it useless. Go on YouTube and we what you can do about your iPhone

You cannot use an unlocked at&t phone with the verizon network. At&T uses a GSM network, while verizon uses CDMA. Notice how your at&t phone has a sim card? verizon phones do not use those. the "sim card" is built directly into the phone. this means when you switch phones, they have to transfer everything over in the store. Your phone number is basically built into that specific phone. I am unsure as to the process of unlocking your phone, so I cannot help with that. however, if you unlock it, you can use it with any other cell phone network that utilizes a GSM network, such as t-mobile.
