Can you text message people without a Blackberry or Palm Centro Pro if you have one?

Im 14 and choosing phones to pick. The Palm Centro pro, Or the blackberry pearl. And im VERY Social. What if i have a Blackberry Pearl and my best friend Tevin Doesn't? Can i Still text him on a regular basis? If not can you recommend a nice phone for a 14 year old dude and is currently stuck in a 4 year contract w/ Sprint meaning im not going 2 get a phone that's on the Verizon or AT&T Network. BTW:Most People say the blackberry pearl is too small, and the keyboard is f-ed up and terrible to use. And The Palm Centro isn't for a teenager like myself but im digging the touch screen and sprint tv. If you Can text Message Non-Blackberry people such as my best friend with a Blackberry or Palm Centro Pro , can you give me a suggestion on what i should buy? THANKS SSOOOOOO MUCH!

you can txt anybody on any phone, on any service, from any phone. (haha). and you may want to consider another phone if you dont like the blackberry or the palm centro. on the verizon network, i would suggest the voyager, or the enV2.
