Traded my att iphone for a verizon phone on Craigslist.. turns out the Verizon was stolen/lost?
-
I was stupid and didn't get it checked out right away. I called Verizon this afternoon on my lunch break from work and I gave them the MEID number from the Verizon iphone because I had the suspecion that it had been reported as lost or stolen because there was a phone number listed under the "Phone" under the Settings. They checked up on it and said it had been indeed reported as lost. Bummer. I asked them what were my choices and they said that if I could get ahold of the original owners and they contacted Verizon that they could take the phone off the lost/stolen list and the ESN/MEID would be clear to be used again. Well, on my way back into work, I text the person that I traded my phone with. I know that basically that if I reported his number or anything to the police that nothing would be done but me telling them that I was going to do that made them start responding to me. They said they had bought the phone from someone else on Craigslist and that person was selling an ATT phone.. when they received the phone it was Verizon and since they had no use for Verizon, they put an ad on Craigslist and I answered it. They said that person scammed them out of 300 dollars but they said they still called Verizon (the people I bought it from) and they said that the phone was not listed under any lost/stolen even though Verizon told me otherwise. The mother of the child that traded with me told me her story and how she was going to contact a friend from Verizon and see if they could get it removed from that list. I doubt that because yeah, doing that for a complete stranger? Too good to be true. So, I called the number that was listed in the phone just for some chance that whomever lost it got a new phone and I could talk to them or something. 30 minutes later or so, I get a phone call from the supposed original owner and he said he lost the phone about a year ago and reported it lost and the insurance company used with Verizon sent him a new phone. Whether or not this was the original owner or not, he was very nice and said that he would help me any way he could as long as he would not be charged by the insurance company for that replacement phone being sent to him. I told him that I'd be more than happy to give him money just as a token of goodwill if he helped me (I went from iphone at&t to a t-mobile android which sucked.. then to verizon on a dumbphone so using an iphone again just excited the crap out of me so I was super sad when I found out it was bad esn). I just called Verizon and they verified that all he has to do is call to remove it from the loststolen list and that he wouldn't be charged for the replacement phone that had been sent to him that year ago or so. I really don't want to screw this guy over so is that information correct?

Answer:
If he (being the previous owner) said it was fine, I'm sure they've sorted it out.
