What do I need to record music at home?

What do I need to record music from home?

  • I am looking to set up my own recording operation from home and am curious to know what I will need and how much it will cost. I play a Yamaha portable grand midi keyboard, and am also looking for a pretty decent mic to record vocals and maybe guitar.. Will I need a better computer to run a program like Pro Tools? I currently have a middle-of-the-road Toshiba Satellite, 2 years old. Thanks

Well obviously something to input the audio to your computer, a nice audio program and the instruments. I suggest the M-audio fast track interfaces. Pick whichever one you can afford/you need for your application and they come with Pro Tools SE to get you started, they've got XLR and quarter inch so you could go from your keyboard to the 1/4" slot and mics to the XLRs. Fast-tracks start around $120 and go to $500 but the quality doesn't vary, just quantity of ports. I'd go with a nice SM58 for the mics and as long as you have at least a two-core processor you should be fine on the computer standpoint Happy recording!
