Why isn't iPod charger working anymore?

Help me!! My ipod touch isnt working.?

• brother gave me his old ipod touch.. Everything worked fine. It died and when I wanted to charge it, someone else held down the power button and home key to reset it before charging it and when I looked back it had symbols on it that told me to plug it into itunes. when I plugged it into the computer it told me that the ipod couldnt be accessed because the mobile device service was not started. I follwed the directions to start the service in the control pannel. now itunes says that the ipod touch cannot be accessed because theres a passcode on the ipod but the screen of the ipod still says to plug i into itunes and doesnt do anything else. How can this be fixed?!
