How can i update iPod touch to 3.0?

so on the summary part where it shows my ipod under the pic of the ipod it says version then has an option for update or restore. by update it says a newer version of the ipod software is availabe (version 5.0.1) to update your ipod with the latest software click update. but when i click update it says the version of itunes(9.1.1) is the current version. so why is it thinking i want to update my itunes when i click where it says to update my ipod? my ipod is currently running on 3.1.2 software, i want to get at least ios 4 so i can watch netflix on my ipod touch

Because u need to have your iTunes updated to current version of iTunes before you can update your iPod so by doing so you will be able to update keep in mind when you update to ios5 you will lose everything and have to re-download everything again and add music again too
