Why can't I put folders or music on my MP3 player?

• I've had this mp3 player for a little over a year. It has been working wonderfully until recently. My hubby had installed windows media player on the computer and when I hooked my mp3 player up to the computer it asked if I wanted to play the music with media player which I clicked okay to. Windows media booted up but my songs never showed up. So I disconnected my mp3 player and to my dismay all 200 some odd songs I had on there where gone and also the folders that came installed on the mp3 player is gone. So the mp3 player is completely empty yet when I try to create a folder or copy mp3 files onto the player I get a error saying the directory or folder cannot be created(or copied in the case of the mp3 files). I no longer have the software that came with the player and I have no idea what brand it is so that doesn't help me any :( What in the world is wrong with my mp3 player and how can I fix it?
