Can I use my portable external hard drive to run Itunes?

ITunes won't read CDs! I can still use WMP though!?

  • So, it isn't my actual CD drive because I can use WMP to play CDs and DVDs. It is just iTunes that refuses to read or recognize that I have a CD in the drive. This upsetting me because I am trying to import my CDs onto iTunes and then my iPod. Here's the kicker: I've been doing this for over about 8 months now on the same computer with the same iTunes. It just stopped reading CD a couple weeks ago. I have the newest version update. I use Windows XP. I don't know if it matters, but I have IE, Firefox, and Safari browsers on the comp, though I pretty much use Firefox all the time now. I have run Diagnostics on iTunes. I can even eject the CD through iTunes. Diagnostics says: *Audio CD Found (green) *Driver correctly installed (green) *Unable to access audio cd (red) *Audio CD read successfully (green) And at the end the analysis comes up and says: "No drivers in LowerFilters. UpperFilters: incdrm (4.3.23.2), InCDPass (4.3.23.2), GEARAspiWDM (2.0.7.5), D: HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8162B, Rev 0015 Audio CD in drive. Could not open CD handler, 32. Problem with installation of drive in Windows or drive contains copy protected CD. Audio CD reading succeeded. Get drive speed succeeded. Error Correction is turned on for importing audio CDs." WTF?? Copy protection should have nothing to do with even being able to PLAY a disc with iTunes, which I can't. Anyone ever had this problem or know what I can do. Oh, I did try (suggested by Apple) running iTunes directly from my Program Files folder instead of using the shortcut. Same thing happened. I also edited my import preferences as Apple suggested and checked the box for "Error Correction turned on for importing CDs" since it had been unchecked. Nothing changed. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Answer:

sounds like a permissions error. 1) Go to C:\Program Files\iTunes 2) right-click iTunes.exe 3) select properties 4) click the compatibility tab 5) check the box that says "run as administrator" 6) click OK 7) close iTunes and open it again
