What is firmware for your itouch?

Itouch won't restore with the firmware I've downloaded?

I have a 3g 8gig ipod touch that I've been wanting to jailbreak but itunes won't let me restore it with the 3.1.3 firmware I've downloaded. I got the download from http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/. When I hold shift and click restore and select the firmware to restore, "The iPod "iPod" could not be restored because the firmware file is not compatible" pops up. Please help me out and thanks in advance.

First of all, are you sure you have downloaded the correct version of the firmware? Second, apple stopped signing older firmwares, so i presume they stopped signing this one too. This means you will only be able to restore to the newest firmware, unless you have SHSH blobs saved on saurik's server.
