    If I were you I wouldn't try free sites like Limewire etc, there's a good chance you'll pick up a virus. I've been using http://www.legal5ounds.com for a couple of years now without any virues. You have to pay 9¢ a song but it's worth it for knowing it's not going to muck up your computer

I haven't been to the site in a long time, but www.mp3.com used to host a ton of unknown/unsigned bands. They're mp3s were free to download legally. I got a lot of great stuff from them.
