Transfer records to CDs?
-
I'm looking to transfer a few vinyls to CDs, but apparently I'm being difficult about it because a) I don't want to buy the $100-something dollar device to do it myself (which also won't remove pops, hisses, etc). b) I don't want to send my vinyls out in the mail to the many online companies who do it (these are records of my Dad singing, and they're the only ones in existence). ... So does anyone know an actual PLACE I could go to get this done? Like, a building? With the service? I thought this would be a piece of cake (there are lots of camera shops around that still do old picture conversions and touch-ups... this isn't THAT much different, is it?), but I'm finding nothing. One last caveat, and I realize this might be the breaking point: it has to be in the general Los Angeles area. I'm not flying to a different county or state to do it. If there's a company that does this service (e.g., "Sam Goody"), maybe I can try and find one of the chains near me...? I really appreciate the help. I treasure these records and want to put them in a format where they're less likely to get damaged! Kal

Answer:
the easiest and maybe cheapest way would be to record them into a computer and then burn them off. for this you would need to be able to record the output of a turntable to the input of your computer. this would probably require you to get an interface. you can get one for less than $100 for something like this i would assume. when if comes to the pops and hiss. it's going to be there in some form no matter how you have it done. with this you can use EQ and try to filter out the majority of this. you may find a website that tells you the frequencies to cut out. i know they have plug-ins to add the vinyl effects, they may also have a plug-in to help remove them. if that wont work for you, i would contact a recording studio. the studio i worked at in chicago, we had an elderly lady come in with all of these old two-track tapes we were able to transfer them to discs for them. being vinyl this might be a little different. they might not have an actual turntable, but if you do, then they could probably work with that. this might be your best bet anyway because the engineers at the studio will be better equip to filter out the unwanted noise. being the LA area, i'm sure there are a lot of studios, and someone could help you if anything, lead you in the right direction. you might also try radio stations. good luck. i've been needing to do this myself, but i don't have an output on my turntable.
