How Long Should I Charge My iPod Touch When I First Get It?

I'm getting an iPod Touch 4th gen today! I was wondering how long (exactly) should I charge it for BEFORE I use it? Do I have to let it charge fully before I use it or can I use WHILE it's charging for the first time? Thanks, Lizz
