Dolby digital on tv?

Why won't my HDTV support Dolby Digital when I run sound from it to my Home theater with an optical cable?

  • I have my XBOX 360 connected to my TV via HDMI, which supports full Dolby Digital 5.1 or higher. My TV has audio out via optical cable which I can run to my home theater. But when I play a game or any media on it the audio is only Pro Logic II. Why is my TV not putting out Dolby Digital?

  • Answer:

Chris L is right, but to add. Most tvs do not pass 5.1 thru their optical outputs, just stereo. So running the HDMI into the tv for video then running the optical into the receiver for surround sound is the solution. Be sure to turn off the tv's sound so you don't get an echo. The only time you will get surround out of the optical is if you are using an antenna. If you are using a cable or sat box, run the HDMI from that into your tv too, and the optical to the receiver, same as your xbox.

Connect the xbox straight to the receiver via optical. Don't go thru the TV it's unnecessary
