I've looked in the manual but when I try to set the shutter speed it really doesn't work. I think I'm a bit off or confused with the wording. Could anyone explain to met step by step how to set shutter speed on Canon Xs/1000D please? Thanks a ton!

Answer:
first set your camera to manual or shutter priority. these are indicated by the "m" and "tv" icons on top of the wheel on the camera. once it is in this mode use the other black scrolling wheel to change the value. scrolling to the right whill higher the shutter speed and scrolling to the left will lower the shutter speed. i hope that helped

Set mode dial to Shutter Priority. Turn wheel to change shutter speed. You can change shutter speed in Manual mode but I'm not so sure what buttons to press to toggle from aperture and shutter.
