Canon 500D Video Recording Limit?

Opinions for DSLR cameras?

  • I would like to purchase a DSLR or micro four-thirds sized camera to do a combination of video and still work on. The emphasis would be on video. I really like the Samsung NX-10 http://bit.ly/dn8bi1 but a mark against this is the proprietary mount system and a major drawback is the lack of an audio input. Proprietary lenses isn't that big of a deal, but it would be nice to have standard ones so that I can have easy upgrade routes, and I have some K mount Tamron lenses already. I've also been looking at the Canon EOS 500D and the 550D and the Lumix G10. I need you to suggest some others to take a look at. I've also wondered whether just to go for a decent compact camera like the Lumix Tz10 or FZ38 or Canon SD780 IS and then buy a location audio recording system and some mics for when I need good audio. The attraction of this is that it's compact, and so easier for more home-video stuff, and I can also buy a waterproof case for it. I suppose ideally I'd buy both, lol. And I am also willing to purchase second hand so if you know of anything suitable that may be within my budget at good quality, suggest it. And my budget is preferably no more than £650(GBP) I'm in the UK.

I do like your choice of the Canon EOS 500D and the 550D. They both have 1280 x 720 (HD 30 fps) and 1920 x 1080, but the 550D has the 30fps whereas the 500D only has 20fps. Canon has an infinite number of upgrade routes. I'd buy new, but understand you have budget restraints. I would suggest factory refurbished with a warranty. The 550D will be hard to find used as it just came out in February, but you never know. Some people just try things then dump them. Looks like you can get a new 500D with a starter lens within your budget. http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=Canon+500D&x=0&y=0

Here are several very well rated DSLR, within your budget. For compacts, in regards of TZ10, (SZ7 in US), that is probably among the best in that price range. GPS, HD video 720p, HDMI out, 12x wide angle. Compact cameras usually don't have many manual settings but the TZ10 has. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.co.uk%2Fs%3Fie%3DUTF8%26x%3D16%26ref_%3Dnb%5Fsb%5Fnoss%26y%3D19%26field-keywords%3Dtz10%26url%3Dsearch-alias%253Delectronics&tag=dslr.cameras-21&linkCode=ur2&camp=1634&creative=19450 One alternative to the TZ10 is Sony HX5VB (or HX5V /B), with x10 and less manual modes but more "scene modes" which maybe somewhat approximates how settings would be if manually set, therefore could handle shorter situations. It also has GPS. A difference is HD video 1080i. HDMI output adapter. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00336EOEQ?ie=UTF8&tag=dslr.cameras-21&linkCode=as2&camp=1634&creative=19450&creativeASIN=B00336EOEQ TZ10 and HX5V don't handle low light situations very well.
