Does the Nikon D90 take video?

What's the better quality video camera? Nikon D90 or Canon Legria HF200?

  • What's better in terms of quality and resolution or generally overall? I have access to both and wasn't sure which one to use to make a promo video with Nikon D90 (video recording) http://imaging.nikon.com/products/imaging/lineup/d90/en/d-movie/ Canon Legria HF200 http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/camcorders/253063/canon-legria-hf200

  • Answer:

Usually a video camera is better at shooting video than any dSLR. In this case however, the HF200 does not have the necessary 3-CCD sensor which makes video cameras a better choice if your first goal is to shoot video The D90 (now the D7000) is superior when it comes to shooting still images to ANY video camera Here is what the D7000 can do when shooting video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMbBKukJzBk

In my point of view obviously D90 is best.It has following features:- * 12.9 megapixel DX-format CMOS sensor (effective pixels: 12.3 million) * 3.0-inch 920,000 pixel (VGA x 3 colors) TFT-LCD (same as D3 and D300) * Live View with contrast-detect AF, face detection * Image sensor cleaning (sensor shake) * Illuminated focus points * Movie capture at up to 1280 x 720 (720p) 24 fps with mono sound * IS0 200-3200 range (100-6400 expanded) * 4.5 frames per second continuous shooting (buffer: 7 RAW, 25 JPEG fine, 100 JPEG Normal) * Expeed image processing engine * 3D tracking AF (11 point) * Short startup time, viewfinder blackout and shutter lag * Slightly improved viewfinder (96% frame coverage) * Extensive in-camera retouching including raw development and straightening * Improved user interface * New optional compact GPS unit (fits on hot shoe) * Same battery and vertical grip as D80 * Vignetting control in-camera * 72 thumbnail and calendar view in playback Its really a best piece.

You can consider Canon LEGRIA HF200 High Definition Digital Camcorder - Silver (15x Advanced Zoom, 2.7 Inch Widescreen Colour LCD) Shoot Full HD movies (up to 24Mbps) to SDHC memory card Canon HD Camera System with 3.3MP Full HD CMOS Canon HD Video Lens (15x Optical) and DIGIC DV III Instant AF, Super Range OIS and Face Detection Technology make shooting great-looking videos easy Video Snapshot: create a montage of clips with your choice of music

Quite certainly the Canon Legria HF200 - it's a dedicated camcorder after all, while the D90 is a photo camera with video ability as an additional gimmick. Also, the HF200 costs about 80% as much as a D90, so it's quite up to date technology too. For that you get 100% video ability, whereas only a fraction of the price of the D90 went into its video capability.
