How can I use my old memory card on my new camera?

How can I get pictures off of a SanDisk SDHC memory card without using my digital camera that I use it with?

  • My camera is broken and i want to get my pictures off of the memory card but I can't upload them through the camera. My laptop doesn't have the correct card readers so I was looking for another way to extract the data. Do photo centers like CVS or Walmart have a service that gets the photos out of the card for you in a digital form, without having to purchase photos?

  • Answer:

I don't know about Walmart & CVS, but Costco offers a CD of your picture files for about $1.00. I would imagine the two stores you mention also offer this service. In the future when you replace your camera with another one, consider purchasing a "memory card reader" for the card size, most likely "SD" size. These car readers are cheap around $10.00.

The photo centers are certainly capable of doing this, but I don't know about the cost. Just get an external card reader that supports SDHC. Most new ones should. Also, Windows XP needs a hotfix to read SDHC cards. Vista and 7 support them out of the box, though.
