What's a good usb camera to use for taking good quality pictures?

I'm planing on taking a 2,500 mile round trip vacation; I'll be driving the whole way and I wanted to take a time lapse of the the trip. So, I'm looking for a usb camera that I can use in conjunction with my on-board laptop in my car, to take really good quality still shots; I could care less about video. I know there is more to finding a good usb camera instead of it's Mega Pixels, but it's hard to find reviews on cameras specifically for their still shot quality. Can anyone help me out? What's a good usb camera for taking high quality still shots?
