How To Get Started in Filming?

Best way to get a steady shot?

  • 4 months ago I bought a Canon t3i in hopes of using it for video. I started filming with it immediately after opening it and discovered that most of my shots were very shaky. I started looking into ways to stabilize my shots such as using a lens with IS or investing in a fancy shoulder rig. Both of these options seemed a little pricey (at least for a nicer shoulder rig) and some of the DIY rigs I made either broke easily or were unreliable. I need to be able to move my camera while I'm filming, so the stationary use of a tripod is out (though using it as a monopod seemed to help a little). What's the most effective way (in terms of cost and results) that I can get a steady shot out of my new camera?

  • Answer:

Keep your elbows tucked in close to your body, breathe out, shoot.

learn to hold the camera steady. I did a career in television news / sports photography, virtually all of it hand held. Holding a camera stead is really important. Now that I'm shooting with a dslr, like you (I have a t1i) I do the tuck thing but I also pull hard on the strap against my neck and those two things seem to help quite a bit. I also use my 18-55 IS, the only IS lens I own and that helps a great deal. Shaky is part of dslr video without a steady cam unit or some short of shoulder rig. But even with a shoulder rig you have to be able to hold the camera steady... it's all on you. Oh by the way, in case you hadn't noticed, your t3i doesn't do "filming" it does video. Terms are important so learn yours please because "filming" what they do in Hollywood... we do video.

bend your arms and tuck your elbows to the front of your body. also try opening up your aperture to the widest it can go to enable you to get a faster shutter speed if that helps. there is a shoulder rig of $100 at B&H.
