What kind of digital camera should i buy?

  • I know very little about photography, but i will be travelling and want a good camera. I want something relatively simple, but am willing to take the time to leanr how to use a more complex range of features to achieve good photo quality. One of the big things i've found unsatisfying in digital cameras i've used is that when i photograph the moon, it looks tiny, if i photograph a landscape, it appears as if i'm 3 miles back from where i shot it. Basically i want a camera that captures sights as i see them, crisp images, nice colours. the distance shooting is the only specific problem i have to address, other than that i want suggestions for good cameras. do i need to get into SLR's to achieve this quality, or can point and shoots achieve this now (i havent bought a new camera in about 6 years). I'm looking to spend 200-400, but may go higher if it makes a big difference in quality. thanks in advance.

if you travel i would recommend a good quality waterproof, shockproof point and shoot camera. you don't have to worry about them on the beach, damp days or dropping them. the quality of the pictures on the high end models is very good. i have a Panasonic Lumix TS2, it take great pictures with a 6x zoom and 720p hd video. the Canon D10 is also very good, but only has a 3x zoom. you can get the TS2 on sale at Future Shop for $299 Canadian. the Canon is about the same price. if your picky about your pictures stay away from the other waterproofs because picture quality is lower according to the tests i read about before i bought mine.
