How do I get into professional [freelance] sports photography?

Looking to get into sports photography, what body should I invest in?

  • I currently have a Canon Rebel T2i (550D) but it does not shoot fast enough. I was looking around the web and many people suggest 1D Mark ii, although it only has 8 mp? Isn't that going to be a big downgrade in image quality from my 550D? I feel like an 8 mp will hardly look professional quality. The main lens I will be using is 70-200mm f/2.8. What are your suggestions for a camera body and/or lenses?

  • Answer:

The T2i shoots at 3.7 shots per second... you CAN get good shots with that, just fewer at "once", but you need GOOD fast glass paired with good timing. Since you have the 70-200 2.8, I don't know why you can't get good shots? You don't need 1000 shots in a row and hope a few are good. Just work on your technique and timing and you should be fine. As far as the Mark ii, it might be the 5d mark ii, the 1d is good, but it's so old. Notice I didn't mention MP, it doesn't have much of a difference. It's the fact that it's older. Meaning your not going to find any with low shutter actuations. How long do you want your camera to last for the money you're going to spend? What body/lens combos? Depends on your budget. The 7d is great(I've had it since March, love it!). The 5d Mark ii is amazing(and full frame). The 400 2.8 is a big pro sports lens(but VERY pricey!). What version of the 70-200 do you have? That should be good enough. I love my 'is usm ii'
