What is the best digital SLR camera for the best price? (looking for people with some camera knowledge..)?

I'm looking to buy a new camera as I start getting into professional photography. I currently have a Nikon P90 that has 24x optical zoom and 12.1 megapixels. It's a great camera and has never failed me, BUT I just really love the quality of SLR's especially when it comes to using the macro setting and portraits. Anyways, I'd like my next camera to be under $600, seeing as I'm a student and on a budget. And I usually only go for Cannon or Nikon (unless a camera from another maker stands out for some reason). And I don't want any cameras from before, say, 2005. There's been so many advances recently that it would be out-of-date almost immediately. My camera NEEDS to take pictures immediately, not one of those that you click and then 2 seconds later it takes the picture. Annnndddd that's all I can think of right now:) Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hey, DSLRs do not have shutter lag of 2 seconds, that's only at P&S cameras. The models I recommend you are: - Canon EOS XS - Canon EOS XSi - Nikon D3000 - Nikon D5000 These are all below 600$, the D5000 costs a bit more.
