Canon EOS Rebel Xsi from Craigslist, did I get a good deal?
-
I purchased an Xsi from a guy from Craigslist a few weeks ago. I went into buying the dslr knowing how to use old style Canon Slrs', particularly I own a Canon AE-1 Program so I've been used to fully manual settings for shots. The guy I bought it from claimed that it was his girlfriend's camera, and he provided me with a photography website owned by her brother who is a professional photographer so it seemed pretty legit. I met him in a plaza where he worked, which I'm not sure exactly where but he seemed to know a little about photography. The only thing that got me about his seller's personality was that he just wanted to sell it to me quick and get out, which is basically what happened after I decided it was decent. I paid him $450, and he told me him and his girlfriend were upgrading to a 7D. He said he purchased the camera in April and it had around 2500-3000 actuations on it, but he did not have the original packaging with it. I received everything that should come with the camera except the video cable and for some reason no lens or body caps, of which he said he lost. Overall, I got the body which was in excellent condition, the 18-55mm IS kit lens, Canon strap, Usb cable, manuals, Canon battery + extra generic brand battery, Canon Charger, Camlink 58mm UV Filter, and a Lowepro Ex180 Carrying bag all for $450. I went on Ebay and purchased the caps separately and an FD to EOS lens adapter for my old lenses. I just checked my camera today with this app: http://astrojargon.net/eosinfo.aspx?AspxAutoDetectCookieSupport=1 and it says I have around 7500 actuations (I took around 500 since I got it). I don't know how accurate this tool is but it seems like it should work. If so, then the guy lied about the actuations, or he probably lied about buying it new. Overall, is this a good deal? After buying the caps the rounded total is around $470 and I'm actually considering selling it again. I really do love the camera and I've learned a lot from using it, but I feel like I could do better if I could get at least $550 for it. Please do let me know! Thanks in advance!

Answer:
It sounds like you got a pretty good deal. 7500 actuations isn't very many so you're in good shape there. How come he was selling the camera? Does his girlfriend know he sold it? If you love the camera, why sell it? Is there something you want to do in photography that this camera won't do?
