What does the mah mean for batteries and cameras?

Are batteries on film cameras only used for the flash?

  • I got this camera from an antique shop. I think it's a little too new to be considered antique though. It says Yashica on the left side and it says Lynx 5000e on the right. It's 35mm. So I loaded a roll of film and took quite a few pictures, and then stumbled upon the place where you're supposed to put mercury batteries, and there aren't any there. But when I take a picture I watch the lens open so I'm thinking and hoping that the batteries are either for a seperate flash or there is a feature on it that will determine the exposure, and to check if it's working you look in the viewfinder and it will flash red or something like that. The bottom line is, if the lens is opening, there is a picture being made batteries or no batteries right?

  • Answer:

Nope they're not! The flash is seperate

If the shutter was operating then it is mechanical and does not require batteries so you were making exposures on the film. The camera's meter and flash will require batteries. If you were shooting without using a meter I wouldn't expect to get very many, if any, good exposures. You will have over- or under-exposed most of them. If you do get any good exposures it will simply be from luck. My father-in-law has an old Yashica. They don't make mercury batteries anymore so you have to find a replacement. The replacement battery for his camera was $10 at a specialty battery store. We couldn't find one locally anywhere else. But I did find it at B&H online.

yes if you are winding the film and taking pictures then it's taking pictures. the battery is for the light meter. to let you know if you are over or under exposing. hope this helps. also, you can use alkaline batteries instead of mercury. if you want to save the fish.
