What should I clean my SLR lens with?

What does the designation FD mean for a Canon SLR Lens?

  • I have two Prospec lens from a Canon SLR camera that I bought in the late 80's. I have just purchased a Panasonic Lumix G2 camera and have found a Bower Lumix Lens Adapter for Canon FD lens. How can I determine if these two Prospec lens are "FD"? The only identification on the Prospec lens is "Prospec No.87178380 1:3.5-4.5 f=35-70mm & Prospec No. 87152620 1:3.9 f=80-200mm. Thank you for any guidance you can provide regarding this. Laura Stevenson

  • Answer:

FD and FL Canon lenses work on ALL Canon 35 mm SLR cameras made before 1988. If you own a newer EOS camera, they will not fit directly and are really not worth the effort to use with an adapter.

Canon's "FD" mount was their standard before the EF mount -- the EF mount has electrical contacts for full autofocus, and is different from the older FD mount. If your Canon SLR (you didn't say which one) supports autofocus, it's almost certainly an EF mount, and won't work with that adapter. Your lenses should somewhere say either "FD" or "EF" on them -- have a look. It'll probably be on the lens barrel or the lens mount itself, not the front of the lens. If it doesn't have such a designation, look for a row of electrical contacts on the lens -- if it has them it's EF and not FD. Peace.

FD was just a convenient label used by Canon for their bayonet mount. Pentax called theirs K. IYou do realise that functionality will be severely compromised, though ? No Autofocus, you'll only be able to meter stopped down, and only Aperture Priority or Manual Exposure modes will work.
