I have a Canon AV-1, an old SLR with detachable lens. What new better lens could I use with it?
-
Canon AV-1 is a really old SLR, it was gifted to my dad by my uncle almost 3 decades ago. However, it still surprises me by producing outstanding photos. The camera along with it's lens is in good condition. I have a Sony digicam too, but I was willing to do more with my SLR. I don't have the money right now to buy a new DSLR. People, please tell me what better lens could I use with it. Not to forget it's SLR and not DSLR.

Answer:
There are no new lenses for the FD mount. You also don't tell us what lens you have now that you aren't happy with, although the "kit" lens on that camera was the 50mm f/1.8 FD. My first SLR was the Canon AL-1, a sibling of your AV-1, along with the AT-1 and AE-1. All good bodies. There are a few short zooms for that mount, and a LOT of telephoto zooms. You may find that getting your hands on a 28mm prime and a 70-210 zoom in FD mount will let you do just about anything you may wish. The post above about using IS lenses is wrong, those lenses don't fit your camera. Some of the folks here are not as old as EF mount that those lenses work with!

Depends on what you have now on that camera and what it is not doing for you. There's loads of FD lenses available, quite a few of those are very cheap. http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/canon/fdresources/fdlenses/index.htm lists a lot of the canon lenses for your camera but other brands also made lenses for it.
There are plenty of Canon FD lenses for sale on Ebay at silly low prices: Here are a couple http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Canon-Lens-FD-85mm-f-1-8-/160636174224?pt=UK_Lenses_Filters_Lenses&hash=item2566a97f90 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/canon-fd-lens-28-mm-wide-angle-great-condition-/130559673318?pt=UK_Lenses_Filters_Lenses&hash=item1e65f683e6 Just put "Canon FD lens" in the Ebay search - I got 750 hits - not all lenses though.
NONE The FD and FL mounts used by your camera are obsolete. Canon changed lens mounts in 1988 to what are called EF mounts. Enjoy your fine AV-1 and look for older used FD or FL lenses that fit the subjects you tend to shoot
Most of the new lenses have a feature called image stabilizer which saves a lot of shots. As your camera has detachable lenses you can use them. Canon puts it on their lens instead of the body of the camera so you can take advantage of that feature. As long as the mounts of the lenses fit you can use them. I have slr and dslr camera as well as digital and my lenses are all interchangeable. I also like working with filters on my lenses it opens up a whole new world in taking pictures.
It IS amazing how good a pictures you can get with a old camera. To get the same quality with a digital SLR you would have to pay hundreds or thousands of dollars. Probably a great lens for you would be a zoom lens or two. A 28 to 70 lens and a a 70-210 lens are two good lenses. Buy only Canon FD lenses and you will be able to resell them later. Vivitar lenses are much cheaper in price, and you won't be able to see in difference in quality, but they are difficult to resell. U might buy a vivitar or other off brand fish eye lens instead of Canon made ones, as Canon ones cost hundreds of dollars. If you are really into architecture photos, U might want to spend the big bucks on a Tilt and shift lens. It is good for keeping buildings from looking abnormal or having a angle of focus.
