How to shoot continuous video on Canon 500D?
-
Hi, I want to shoot continuous video for a few hours e.g. a flower blooming or the sun rising and setting. I was wondering if there is anyways to do this by maybe connecting your camera to your computer and recording? Many thanks in advance

Answer:
The overheating of the sensor is a major issue for all such cameras. My Sony A77 is probably better than most, but still shuts down the sensor if the camera over heats, which Sony reckons would give you 30 minutes in a 30C environment. FYI the MagAlloy body of the A77 does get noticeably warmer when shooting video! There may be other issues with some cameras in the EU, where to comply with regulations (probably a tax thing) many cameras will stop recording after 29 minutes, 59 seconds :S In this case Big Brother has just turned your camera off!

I own a 500D and it's true about heating. The video limit is about 12-minutes because of this heat. The fact is if that heat rises too high it'll damage the sensor and internal parts and you'll have an expensive paper weight. Get used to making clips. Mine are normally 15 - 20 seconds for post later. If you learn to use the video function properly for the edit bay, you can make excellent videos with this or any video camera.
simply put, no. the 500D's CMOS sensor will heat while shooting video. The recording will automatically stop after 10 minutes or so (for 1080p, and a little longer for 720p) to prevent overheating and possible damage to the sensor
How about a series of shots taken in succession at constant intervals for a set period of time? You can use the shots as frames for a video that would run relatively faster than in reality. See intervalometer.
As others have stated, you can't shoot continuous video for that long with a DSLR. It might be possible for a camcorder, but even this would be a waste. You're probably interested in *time-lapse photography*, where images are taken at regular intervals (e.g. once a minute, hour, or day). I can't say for sure if the 500D has this capability built-in, or if you need to get special equipment like automatic timers (intervalometers).
You need lots of memory!
