What is the lens for this Canon SLR digital used for?
-
My wife wants a Canon SLR camera, Model XSi D-SLR with 18-55 mm image stabilized lens. For an additional cost of about $200 she can get it with the 55-250 mm zoom lens. What are the capabilities/advantages of the 55-250 mm lens? Recommendations?

Answer:
If your wife will be taking pictures indoors the 18-55mm lens will be the better choice. If most all her photography will be done outdoors then the 55-250 is the better choice. This lens is not very useful indoors unless she is shooting at a basketball game or a school play. If she can get both lenses then that would be the better package, giving her more versatility. The way you stated the question makes me wonder if the additional $200 is to add the 55-250mm lens to the basic package of camera and 18-55mm lens.

This lens makes subjects appear bigger within the image, great for wildlife, great for things like sports. The effect of the telephoto lens also throws the background and foreground out of focus around the sharp subject, so it can make nice portrait pictures too. The additional lens increases the range of uses the camera can be used for, and whilst this isn't canons absolutely top notch lens, it is pretty good in most regards, particularly image wise. Pros wouldn't use this particular lens because of the lightwieght construction and the type of mount (it won't fit canons pro series SLRs, from the EOS 5, 5 Mk2, EOS 1D series etc) but for most other people its a very decent lens, and at $200 a very decent price. Go for it!

The 18-55mm is a mid range lens, while the 55-250 mm is a telephoto lens which means you can shoot images that are farther away. There is a bigger range in depth of focus as well. It really depends on what you want to shoot and what lens you will use. Is she going to be shooting subjects that are far away? If so, the 55-250mm is where you'd want to go. Also, since you're shooting so far away, she may want to get a tripod to stablize herself to take the picture.

http://www.fredparker.com/vislize.htm This website explains focal lengths in laymens terms. Basically if you want a knees to head shot of three people standing in your living room you would use the 18-55, probably at 18mm. If your at a soccer game you'd use the 55-250, probably zooming over 150mm most of the time. The smaller the mm, the wider the shot. The bigger the mm, the more telephoto the shot. Getting both lenses would make for a well rounded starting point. Unless your trying to shoot whole rooms or zoom in on birdies over 300 yards away these two lenses cover a lot of ground. Personally I'd opt for the 18-55 and the 75-300. You wouldn't miss the gap between 55 and 75mm, you could always drop the 55mm shot in the computer, but the extra 50mm between 250 and 300 would really help. Just my opinion.
