  • When I start my 99 Nissan Maxima, the engine shuts off unless I give it gas. What causes this? How to fix it? When I start my car, the engine shuts off unless I give it gas. What causes this? How to fix it? Should I fix it, or just live with it, as it doesnt seem to be causing a problem other than a minor annoyance of having to press the gas pedal to keep it from dying when I first start the car. It only dies when first turned on if I don't give it gas. When it was newer, it didn't need to given a pedal of gas to keep if from dying at the start.

Sounds like your Idle Air Control Valve is sticking due to carbon build up. You can remove it from its housing and clean it with throttle body cleaner and an old toothbrush and likely fix the problem. Good luck.
