What are the disadvantages of unemployment benefits?

Social security/unemployment benefits?

  • I was laid off from my job three years and collected unemployment benefits. Last week I was awarded Social Security disability benefits. The social security administration awarded benefits for a period of time that includes part of the period in which I was receiving unemployment benefits. I have spoken with the unemployment office and nobody seems to know if I am required to pay back the unemployment benefits. If I am required to pay back the unemployment benefits I would like to do it now. I do not want to find out several months down the road that I owe this money. I am getting frustrated because nobody can answer my question. Does anybody know if I am required to pay this money back or to whom I should be speaking?

  • Answer:

Yes,you will have to pay back the unemployment benefits you received during the period you were waiting for disability.

Other answers

You might be able to get an answer if you send a letter to the EDD; better than getting some random clerk that does not know

Before you receive any SSDI, the state will deduct whatever you owe for unemployment benefits.
