Shelter applicants who can’t provide documents proving they are homeless would also be ineligible. if they were kicked out or left because there wasn’t any room to sleep. DHS would then try to make sleeping space for the applicant in that residence by moving around furniture. The agency may even ply primary residents with a new couch, crib or bed to take the applicants back, according to the policy. In other cases, the agency would help the primary resident obtain food stamps or health insurance. “If it makes an available room something that’s a viable option, we want to support that,” DHS Commissioner Seth Diamond said of the proposed policy.
