What is the right skateboard size for me?

Right Size Skateboard?

  • Hi. I am trying to learn some basic skateboard tricks, but think my board is too heavy - can't get much pop. I have a borrowed board with a Baker deck (7.65) and Independent trucks. I am rather small (5 feet) and don't weigh much. I am wondering if getting a smaller deck and lighter trucks might help, but I don't know much about either. I am also wondering if a shorter deck (29 inches) might help. Any input would be great. Thanks!

    When i first started out i was skating a 7.50 Flip board and i thought it was awesome but when i got better I went skating with my friends and i rode a 7.8 blank and it skated hella good. And as time progressed i switched through tons of boards ranging from 7.5 to 8.10 and in the end i decided to stick with an 8.0... Its mainly about preference bigger boards are easier to catch and smaller boards are easier to flip...also if you find a board with steeper concaves you can get a little more pop.

The most important part of choosing a deck is choosing one that you feel comfortable on and the type of riding that you are going to be doing. Street/Technical-It involves doing flip tricks, grinds, rails, gaps, ledges, and so on. For street skating decks from 7.5 to 7.75 inches are usually good because it is easier to flip a thinner deck. Transitions-Transition skaters should look for something around 7.75 inches, possibly wider (depends on the size of your feet). It will be easier to balance and control a deck with a bit more width. All Around If you're going to be doing a mix of street skating and transition skating, look for something right around the 7.75 inches mark.
