Why are people so certain?
-
I actually know many reasons for my question stated above, although I currently wonder why people would be such a way? Rather than "certain", I will change it too "Overconfidence", or believing without proper evidence. Or even with proper evidence they take their assumptions to be true. This is becoming more of a problem nowadays, and it is dangerous too. It stunts human growth in many ways. There are very few axioms in which we can hold to be absolutely true. The rest are assumptions about the environment. Sadly, I see many of these assumptions being held as true. Either it be someones belief in God, or someones disbelief in God. Theories made by scientists. Etc. Granted, I will believe anything that logically correlates, and is "sound" via deductive reasoning. But if some moron yells out "The only point in life is too live", I feel rather sorry for such an absolute statement. I could easily point out individuals commit suicide, altruism in a species, etc... Yet the stay firm. It seems that society has made people into rigid creatures, where only a select few are not. It seems to have created a development of extreme correlation being causation. It seems to have started a movement of misinterpreting data, or basing beliefs on an instance. People may see that blacks have a lesser degree average of intelligence compared to asians, yet do not figure that this is a result of incorrect use of logic. I could group anything together and take the average and it will either be different or the same. It is overall ignorant, and I believe many people have forgotten the foundation of logic, and its importance. I honestly believe that it should be taught in school - Philosophy. A simple understanding that "I am wise, because I know that I know nothing" is very helpful. And by that quote, I simply mean to not accept much as absolute, except basic axioms that "have" to be true. Such as are sensations being representative of something external, etc. So, I ask, why are people so certain? They see their foundation crumble apart, yet do not falter in rebuilding the same mistake. Or, they build a foundation on shaky ground, where it will be bound to fall. What ever happened to people enjoying being wrong? Has such beliefs in "I know what brings happiness" caused people to accept such views as competitiveness, narcissism, selfishness, etc? Rather than collaboration, altruism, logic, and what not? It truly is horrible to see. A society that will have morals, but when presented with why its a moral, they can say nothing more than circular logic, karma, or "If I was in his shoes". This is not to bash on individuals, but it is to ask - "Why are people certain? It obviously has not brought anything worthwhile, so why do people do so? It seems almost like a high-tech dark-age, and were the original dark ages beneficial?" It takes away innovation. I just wonder why. And hopefully, through example and logic, I hope to help individuals recreate the world in such a way that it will be beneficial to all. Obviously not in a day, nor in a lifetime... But to set up steps, before it heads downhill.

Answer:
Why worry about something that you won't be alive to appreciate? If you contribute a small amount to something, you won't be known for it, so recognition is out of the picture. To answer your question somewhat, people are stubborn and hate being wrong. Therefor, they stick to their guns and even try to alter logic to support their theories.

I read the whole thing. I used to but into the whole I am wise because I know nothing, but to a large extent that's not true either. You are born with quite a large bank of knowledge. You are somehow aware of facts such as averting pain is good and if I drink I get drunk and if I eat my stomach won't growl. These are certain facts present in every one of us. More importantly though, humans are animals all in the same just like a dog or an octopus or a lemur. Logic is there because we are physically inferior to many animals, and aids us in protecting ourselves via weapons and technology and clusters of humans in one area called society. Most of us would be very content giving a strong opinion on something we know little about, and politics is a very good example of this. Electing a President or saying whether terrorist attacks are likely are a strong opinion on something you realistically know little about. Some things you know for sure and others you don't. There's no point arguing this, it's CERTAIN.
probably cause they cant think for themselves and are going by what someone else says, i think youre right though
i agree with you except for the part about there being a time when everyone enjoyed being wrong. heraclitus did not think he was wrong because he spent many years of thought on his belief. anaximander, even Aristotle did not think they were wrong because they were right on SOME points, but the truth is that like these great people there will never be someone who is completely right. everyone will think that they are right but we will all be wrong is some way. that is why perfection is so highly valued and is only talked about in myth. sun tsu and machiavelli knew war and conquering but they did not do these things themselves and if they did the they may have failed at some point just like the people today who model themselves after these men. nothing is certain and that is life! plain and simple! almost too simple to actually believe.
The lack of good science education, which emphasizes probability over absolute truth, is part of the problem. Also, self-delusion (over-confidence) may offer some evolutionary advantage. Realists might tend to be somewhat depressed and lack the boldness to make great accomplishments and therefore reproduce at a less than average rate.
