Why do we shake hands/kiss cheeks with other people?

where did this start? why do we do it? and how come in some places, people kiss cheeks instead? just curious...

I guess to be polite. It's just used as a greeting> I prefer the asian way. Not contact what so ever. Just a simple bow.

I don't know, but I've heard that physical contact is important among many humans.
The original practice of hand shaking in biblical times was employed by security forces in an attempt to shake free or expose a concealed weapon of any would be assassin. I can only imagine kissing of any kind is a gesture of utter friendship or endearment.
It started when a child and mother first met.

Shaking your right hand with another was a way of showing you weren't carrying a weapon. The kissing on the cheek thing... I don't know some European crap
