How do you forward mail in the US?

  • I've just moved here from the UK. Back home, there is the policy that if someone no longer lives at an address, their mail can be forwarded by crossing out the address, writing "forward to:" and writing their address (as long as the envelope is unopened). The guy who just moved out of the upstairs apartment is still getting mail sent here. Can I forward his mail to him at no cost to myself?

  • Answer:

Very similar here. Just cross through the address and write "not at this address". Put mail back in your mailbox for pickup the next day. There is no cost to you.

Other answers

It depends on the type of postage that was used. If it was mailed first class, then you do the same as you would in the UK. If the mail is paid with stamps or is just regular mail, then I don't think you can. You might want to check the US Post Office web site or ask your local mail carrier.
