Is it really horrible if a person doesn't shower more than once a week?
-
(sometimes more depending on what s/he did)? So I've asked a couple of these types of questions before.... i guess I'm just thinking i'll get a somewhat different answer, but... is it really all that horrible? I just don't like showering... I feel water-logged afterwards... but my parent's keep saying stuff about it... like how my mom is scared for me to go away to college (I'm 17/f) with my hygiene so bad... and i'm just like STFU. I don't understand (and never have understood) the whole "being clean" thing... I know I went to fat camp for 9 weeks, a couple of years back and because we were working out and sweating we were forced to shower everyday and I fought them tooth and nail about it... and I still didn't want to... I didn't feel "icky". I still don't (not that I do as much exercise now that I did back then, but...)... I don't get that "okay, I'm dirty and grimy.... time to wash" feeling. I shower when I feel like it, and if that means i don't shower for a month (although, it hasn't gotten that far in a long time... mainly because I'm forced to shower at a lot-aka soap poured on my head to make me take shower-) then so be it. I shower when someone says something about how I smell, or (during summer) when the hair on my legs grows out too far for me to bear, or I start to smell myself. I know I'm not like a lot of people, and I do think that if I was to go off to college or live with people I wanted to make nice with I would shower a lot more... just to make it seem like I was at least somewhat normal... but right now... i don't care... and i've gotten a lot of people telling me I'll grow into the whole shower OCD thing... but as i grow older, I just start to care less and less... Why are we so obsessed with showering?? I mean seriously... if the human race had been showering like we are now since we arrived/evolved/whatever on this planet, we'd have no water left, because it'd all be gone...

Answer:
Once a week is all you really need. Showering too much can wash away your body's natural oils, causing you to smell even worse. Once a week is fine, to get all the dirt and germs off your body.

Because everyone is Self - Concious, and Insecure.
I guess the question of whether it's "horrible" depends on whether we're asking you, or asking the people who are forced to be around you. I'm glad you don't work where I do. It's true that every society has its own standards about hygiene, and in some cultures, people would think nothing of the inevitable stench you would have if you refused to shower until people complained. But if you're in a society where people are used to being cleaner, believe me, everyone will notice and be offended by the smell, and it sounds like people do. If they notice it enough that they keep telling you about it, then it must be REALLY bad, because most people feel embarrassed for a stinky person, and are very reluctant to bring up what they see as a delicate issue. At one level, it's a courtesy issue. Because you are around your own "aroma" all the time, your awareness of this smell is pretty deadened, so you have no idea how literally sickening it can be for other people to be around. I've been around "anti-bathers" who could be smelled from several feet away. The room would still smell bad as much as an hour after they left, if they had just stopped by. If they were in the room all the time, the smell would get into the carpet and upholstery so that it always stank. I get that you don't want to shower, but you are NOT entitled to stink up the world that other people have to live in. At one level, that's just plain selfish of you. Being unwilling to conform to your society's standards of hygiene, whatever those standards may be, especially to the extent you describe (fighting "tooth and nail" even when you worked up a sweat by exercising every day???? People having to pour soap on your head to make you shower more than once a MONTH????), is unlikely to be just a personal preference. It's a symptom of mental illness. I mean that very seriously. Get some help, kid!

You can try using Baby Wipes or Bath Wipes to give yourself a sponge bath when you don't shower. Baking Soda can be used as a de-greaser for your hair.
