Why is everyone trying to be indie?

Why is everyone trying so hard to be so different?

  • I know it has to do with the whole hipster phase which is becoming SUPER popular and intensely annoying these days. But I also find this whole phenomenon particular interesting. I have friends (for some reason they are usually always rich ??? :/) that want to be first person to have done something and to be unique and be the only one who owns something, listens to a certain band, or knows about a new song. It's like a competition for them and they know I really don't give a **** about it all so they leave me alone but I hear them complaining to me about how I listened to her waaay before she was famous! or I posted that song on facebook before the band's facebook page even posted it. OR EVEN, GET THIS, I used Macs before everyone else and now you see them everywhere, ugghhhh. JEEEZZ YOU GIVES A ****. But that's not the point of this question. This question is more of a sociological/psychological question. Why feel the need to do this. With more than 6 billion people on the planet you can hardly be that unique so just give it up already. But I get that's precisely why they do. They want to feel like they make a difference in just existing because they are so different. And something else I noticed is that people who are rich (not all of you I know!!) are always trying to separate themselves from "the masses". What is up with that?

  • Answer:

So, do YOU aspire to be the exact same clone as 7 billion other people? What's the point, then of existing, if you're SO easily replaced by someone, ANY one, else? Don't know about you, but I don't have other people's thoughts. I have my own thoughts. So I'm different than all the rest. But, out of 7 billion people, how do you PROVE that? A little of this, a little of that, anything to be noticeably different. "All in all you're just another brick in the wall." ~ Pink Floyd "I'm more than that. I know I am... At least, I think I must be." ~ Moody Blues

standing out from the crowd and getting noticed is an important mating strategy, the ones that stand out the most will get noticed more, and hence improve their chances of getting a higher quality and compatible mate for breeding and replicating their DNA
