Why does it costs so much money to go to a USA university but in Europe/Australia/Canada it is very cheap?

  • It costs less than £3000 a year (two semesters) to go to a good university in Britain. In the USA it costs more than $15000 for one semester at a below-average university. Why is it that it costs so much in the USA? Also a bachelor degree is three years in the UK. A bachelors degree in the USA is four years. A masters degree in the UK is one year. In the USA a masters degree is two years. So a British undergraduate pays approximately £9000 (~$13000) for his entire bachelor's degree. An American undergraduate pays approximately $100000 for his entire bachelor's degree.

The cost varies from state to state and whether its private or state-run. I live in California we have one of the cheapest tuition rates for state-run universities, between $10,000 -$13,000 and they're not considered below average at least not by US standards. Also some students won't pay the entire tuition because the State and Federal government offer free grants and aide money. The difference in years is probably due to the fact we follow a separate criterion for graduation.

The UK pays more towards a student's education, so it keep the tuition down but makes taxes higher. In the US, lower taxes but higher cost of education.
