What should be used for a sword?

Found this sword in a suburban woods in PA, anyone know what it could have been used for?

It's been rusting in my basement for the last five years. Anyone know what it could have been used for? Like sword combat or chopping wood or something? Literally anything helps! Thanks for your time :)

    By the looks of it, it was the sword of a simple person; carried for defense, chances are this person either left it there on purpose, dropped it in a panic, or was defeated and was left there. It could also be entirely fake. People fake rusted swords all the time. But if it is legitimate, that is what I believe it was for. You do not use swords for chopping wood by the way.
