I'm a person who has a lot of controversial beliefs, what should I say if people ask me what my beliefs are?
-
I have several controversial beliefs - I can't help them, those are just the things I believe. I won't say what they are for fear of angering some of you. I've just started a new job and if the subject of religion, politics or war ever comes up and someone asks me my beliefs, I don't know what to say... I am very respectful of other people's beliefs but people aren't always with mine because of the level of controversy. If asked about my beliefs I don't want to lie, but i'm not sure what I should say either?

If you don't have the courage of your convictions, then don't convict.

Firstly ask, "Will you take offence if my opinion differs from yours" if the answer is yes then say you prefer to keep your beliefs private. If the answer is no then go at it with both barrels. i believe that if people don't want the answers they shouldn't ask the questions.
Say as little as possible. Why bore others who will only want to argue. Just enjoy what you believe in and keep it to yourself. Anything else might be deemed attention seeking!
At work, I seldom actually get asked about my opinion on these subjects. People may talk about the subjects but they usually don't specifically ask what I think. When they do, I simply laugh and then say, "My mama always told me not to talk about Religion and Politics in mixed company". I say this very jokingly, with a smile, and with a bit of a southern accent (I've never lived in the south). Then they usually laugh and start talking about how they were told the same thing. Basically, I use humor to change the subject. No one is that concerned to push me for my views after that. People are generally only concerned with their own beliefs and they really aren't interested in the beliefs of others unless they want someone to validate their own beliefs.
If they ask your opinion, give it to them. If they have a problem with the way you see life..... Well, they asked, didn't they? You can't get fired over personal opinion. If anyone wants to argue with you about it, look them in the eye and say "this is neither the time nor place to have an argument." unless you want to argue about it.
Tell the truth. But prepared for the beliefs of others. You don't have a monopoly on beliefs. Be assured that there are plenty of other folks who also think that they are right.
I have said it before and will maintain same, that: 'everyone is entitled to his or her opinion'. Take for instance if the whole world were to have the same opinions or views about every subject under the earth, what will it look like? It will be a boring and an monotonous place. Have you heard about the Hegelian dialectics which in summary simply states that as people brainstorm about an issue with everybody marshaling their own views, there are bound to be disagreements, there would not be unanimity initially but afterwards there is bound to be a position of understanding which they can operate or work with pending when a superior argument comes up. This is sometimes referred to as the Law of opposites. The initial condition of seeming peace or agreement was termed as "thesis" which gives rise to a disagreement or divergent view point "an antithesis", which in due course gives rise to a synthesis- meaning the misunderstanding or disagreement that arose from the initial peaceful condition has now been resolved. This does not mean the end of disagreements. My advise is that you keep your views that you have deep convictions about in life but also listen and examine the views of others so that you can assimilate positive aspects of their views and cement them with yours so that it becomes a complete set of belief or view point that others will want to associate with. Another issue is that you should know how to present your beliefs or view points in a way people will not consciously develop a wall that prevents them from being absorbed. You do this by stating your views modestly and follow it with a question as to what their own views are about certain issues are. If they say they believe something, ask them if someone who is desirous to learn something ask you why do you believe in this or that what will be your answer? Make people talk about themselves and their views about things often than you do about yours. If you must do so yourself, then learn to do it subtly. Do not abandon a view you hold just because it is controversial or because others oppose it. Let them give you a good reason for doing so and if you do find one, do not hesitate to accept it. Do not say what others would have you say when it comes to what your beliefs are. If you do that, you would only be deceiving yourself and there will be an emptiness or void in you which will constantly be yearning to be filled and if you are not able to fill it, it could lead to dissatisfaction and possibly depression. Be yourself. You can only be who you are and no one else.
There are two topics that should not be discussed in the workplace and they are religion and politics. So just maintain this rule of thumb and no problems, unless you want to cause them, you minx.
Hi, I am the same. I have some controversial views on things as well. Its silly because in this Political Correct society we live in, people get offended if you walked past them in the street. If you have your own views and opinions then that's your own. People died in the World Wars for everyone to have their free speech. Some people are scared of being offended and are scared of people who have controversial views so they will try their best to stop that person from saying what they want. Say your views as no one is allowed to stop you because it is a free country. If someone dosen't like what you say then tough.
I've always been like you. When I was younger I used to stand my ground and express my opinions regardless. These days I just keep them to myself. I keep away from boring people because I don't suffer fools gladly. You have to choose really and decide whether you want the hassle or not.
