How many years does it take to become a Doctor?

If you want to become a children's doctor/surgeon how many years will it take?

  • i want to know how many years it will take to become a pediatrician i love working with kids. I want to know how long it will take so i can take summer courses to cut the time.

  • Answer:

The only place you can save time is your undergraduate degree. Med school is 4 years, and residency is 3 yrs for peds and 5-7 for surgery - no shortcuts. I thought I wanted to be a pediatrician, up until I did my peds rotation in med school. I HATED it. You can't know what you want to do until you're well into med school.

Other answers

Four years of college, four years of medical school, and four to five years of residency/internship. Trying to be a pediatrician and a surgeon will push this to five, not four. You won't be able to shorten that, except possibly college. But that will hurt your chance of getting into medical school. Med schools want you to have certain science courses, but they also want to see that you've taken enough other courses that you're not just a machine.
