Asbestos exposure risk, due to sawing cement pipe (asbestos)?
-
Hi there, I am a 17 year old boy and today my parents got this plumber in to renew the bathrrom. There is an old soil/waste pipe in the bathroom which the wanted removed. Yesterday, the roofer had to go outside to remove part of it, and discovered whilst sawing it, it was asbestos. The actual pipe was scheduled to get remopved toady, but i tried to persuade my parents to leave it alone and dont break it, spraing fibres into the air, but went again my decsion. So, thi mornig i had covered everywhere in polyehtene sheeets, to minimse dust exposuire to carpets etc, and told them to make sure the window is hut and extractro fan off, to prevent dust from circulating in air. I told them to damoing the dust before sweeping slowly, then disposing safely. But today, both the plumber and the joiner concluded that the pipe was made up of cast iron, and not asbestos. But whilst they had used an electric saw to cut the pipe in half, they then discovered it was asbestos, and dust was everywhere. After this, my parents and the workers stupidly had extractor fan on and window opened, and my dad was sweeping it up like theres no tomorrow, so it would have been on his slippers and clothes. There is still a lot of asbestos dust on the backwall, which they didn't remove, and are instead building over it, meaning that we have to go a whole weekend with asbestos dust, all over the bathroom. How stupid, can the workmen get, they shoul be trained to spot this instantly. I keep on spraying it with water, to help the fibres stick to the surface and prevent them form blowing about, but could this be worsening this, as when the water evaporates, wicould the fibres flow with the vappour? What can i do, I dont even want to bath. I fell like my whole house is contaminated. I wear a dust mask when I go to the toilet, but it is only to preven tlarge particles and is unsuitable for tiny fibres. My parents are as thick as s**t, and arent bothering at all, as I dont think they realise the dangers. It wont effect them though because by the time the asbestos kcks in theyll be dead anyway probably. Most of all, what really bothers me is that my parents lied to me when i asked then if the pipe was asbestos, as they told me it was'nt, but then i overheard them talk, saying dont tell him, and so i could have went in and cleaned it, without knowing, putting my health at risk, that is how thoughtless they are. They are so stupid, I just wish they would listen to me.

Answer:
While your caution is commendable , the widespread contamination of such a wide area that you are fearing . Likely has not occurred with the severing of a single pipe. Pipes were not constructed of asbestos. Only covered with it sometimes for thermal purpose. After finishing a job , a good washig will decontaminate the area and the hazard is removed. A short accidental one time exposure is highly unlikely to progress to asbestosess. Best wishs
