What is the benefit of being a surgeon?

Neuroscience Major to be a Surgeon?

  • I am attending SLU as a freshman currently, and I have just noticed that they just started offering a Neuroscience program with a BS and I am confused as to changing my current program, which is a BS in biochemistry to a BS in neuroscience. I know for sure that I want to go to med-school and continue as either a Neurosurgeon or a Cardiac Surgeon, but I'm am not quite sure if I want to change it and if it will benefit me in the long term. Some thoughts on this will be a real help, Thanks!

It totally, completely does not matter. At all. Not even little bit. What matters is your GPA and MCAT scores. Advanced study in either of those areas is going to benefit you in med school, but not having that isn't going to hurt you. You can major in anything, as long as you get the basic sciences done. And "knowing for sure" what your future specialty is isn't necessarily a good thing. Most of us who "knew" what we wanted to do ended up doing something completely different. Btw, neurosurgeons tend to be a bit weird, and CT surgeons are egotistical flaming assholes. Maybe that's you. Maybe it's not. You can't have any idea where you fit in until you are doing your clinical rotations in med school. So, to answer your question - no benefit to changing.
