What do you do for work experience in a hospital?

  • hi everyone, I'm 15, 16 in July and I am considering becoming a doctor later in life. I have got a placement in a hospital in the oncology section as my mum knows a doc who works there. i was just wondering if anyone had any experience doing work experience in either an oncology unit or just in any dept in the hospital as i would like to know exactly what you do and what hands on experience you get etcetcetc thanks in advance :)

    Legally, there are only a few things you can do due to HIPAA and other legal issues in place to protect patients. You'll have to ask a local hospital on things you can do, but I cannot think of too many things that directly involve the patient (such as filing or anything).

Well done on that placement. It isn't all that easy to get volunteering experience on an oncology ward, and it will look good if you apply for med school. As other have said, you won't be doing anything clinical (ie, helping to treat the patients), but there will always be something for you to do. This will most likely be in the form of administrative work, doing a tea round for the patients, fetching any newpapers from the shop ordered by patients, odd jobs, sorting/tidying the linen room, perhaps running errands to another ward, serving food at meal time. You could be asked to help feed the some patients if they cannot do so themselves. Of course, you will always be able to chat to the patients. You will not be able to lift patients, take them to the toilet, adminsiter any drugs, offer any clinical opinions, or perform any clincial task. Hope you enjoy it. I'm sure you'll find it rewarding and it will give you a great insight into medicine.

Sadly you will be able to do very little. They will use you help with administration tasks, running and fetching and perhaps escorting patients to various departments. Because of patient confidentiality you contact with patients will be really limited,
