What is Texas top 10% rule?

What do conservatives generally think about the Texas Top 10% rule?

  • When I say the Texas Top 10% rule, I mean the law that states those in the top ten percent of their high school get automatic acceptance to the (state funded) school of their picking. I know this is a broad question, but was wondering what Conservatives generally think of that rule?

  • Answer:

Well, rewards for achievement is very much a key part of conservative philosophy.

I'm not a conservative but I think that's a great system.

It is great! Why do you think we would not like it? We like to see people succeed because of their hard work and intelligence.

they like everyone to pay so the rich get richer and they are anti education

How dare they reward merit and hard work

Acheivement and success should be rewarded

I see incentive here, and a target to aim for.

It's good because there is the reward for hard work, but there is also that the top people from schools of predominate ethnicities will get to go, so it should be able to replace affirmative action. Actually, UT is requiring me to be in the top 8%. Currently, I am in the top 8.5%.

It sounds a little misguided. The facts are that some schools are a lot more work-intensive than other. So those from lenient schools will have an easier time going to college than those who worked harder but didn't quite make it?
