Reality was the downfall of federalism. Federalism was quickly found to be a lot better in fairy tale land than in reality. Even the author of the Federalist Papers, Madison abondoned the Federalist Party prior to being elected president. Washington and Adams both moved away from federalist ideals when they were presidents. After adams the closest thing to leadership the federalist had was Alexander Hamilton who by this time had gone crazy after forcing his son to fight in a duel in which his son died. Hamilton himself died a few years after in a duel with Burr.
