What do you think of this quote by George Orwell on communism?
-
"I am well aware that it is now the fashion to deny that Communism (all serving the enemies new bourgeoisie in Moscow) has anything to do with equality. In every country in the world a huge tribe of party-hacks and sleek little professors are busy 'proving' that Communism means no more than a planned state-capitalism with the grab-motive left intact. But fortunately there also exists a vision of Communism quite different from this. The thing that attracts ordinary men to Communism and makes them willing to risk their skins for it, the 'mystique' of Communism, is the idea of equality; to the vast majority of people Communism means a classless society, or it means nothing at all. And it was here that those few months in the militia were valuable to me. For the Spanish militias, while they lasted, were a sort of microcosm of a classless society. In that community where no one was on the make, where there was a shortage of everything but no privilege and no boot-licking, one got, perhaps, a crude forecast of what the opening stages of Communism might be like. And, after all, instead of disillusioning me it deeply attracted me. The effect was to make my desire to see Communism established much *more* actual than it had been before."

Answer:
That was longer than anticipated. I feel mildly deceived. And no, I don't agree. I don't care what communism is on paper, it's sh*t when implemented.

It was his opinion and he is/was welcome to it. I personally, would not want to live in a world where there is a shortage of everything. Having no privileged class leaves one nothing to strive for. It takes away any reason to do anything. There is nothing to be had or gained and nothing to look forward to.
It means that he admits that "true communism" would rather see everyone suffer equally than see only a few prosper...It means he knows that his view of communism is a likely unachievable ideal....but he chooses to remain an idealist.
Having the benefit of seeing the horror of communism in the rear view mirror, I don't think much of Orwell's quote at all.
Orwell was well intended, but severely mistaken in his defense of collectivism.
Read Orwell's book: "ANIMAL FARM". It really explains what Orwell thinks of Socialism & Communism.
I think Orwell Understands that Communism is a decent Idea, but it will always turn into Socialism.
