Republicans: What EXACTLY is stimulus?
-
If it isn't spending on things that will create jobs like infrastructure and education spending (which is in the stimulus bill, along side some tax cuts) and put paychecks into people's hands quickly, then what is it? If it's tax cuts, can you find one, perhaps two, (reputable) economists who believe that tax cuts alone are very stimulating or better stimulating than infrastructure spending? All the Republican version of a stimulus bill has was tax cuts and no spending cuts, but reputable economists agreed that this would be slow to stimulate the economy or not stimulative to the economy at all. Republicans are against the stimulus bill that will likely pass tonight; so, what exactly would a stimulus be? Please enlighten us.

Answer:
Actually the government cannot stimulate the economy, they can only take money from productive businesses either by borrowing (less money for banks to lend) or by increasing taxes (less money for businesses and consumers). So it is just a spending bill.

You don't need an economist, look at history. The highest tax rate under Carter was 70%. Reagan cut taxes which created 20 million jobs and one of the longest periods of prosperity in history.
Oh stop with the "reputable" tactic. Here is a list of 300+ economists, some Nobel Prize winners, all employed at universities, that say: "...Lower tax rates and a reduction in the burden of government are the best ways of using fiscal policy to boost growth." http://www.cato.org/special/stimulus09/alternate_version.html >> and there are many who did not sign this letter but find this spending bill to be hideous.
this "stimulus" that will pass is nothing but a giant spending bill on useless things that will drive americas economy into an economic meltdown
Well it worked when Reagan did it and it worked when W Bush did it in 01 . I guess if you look at past practice cause and effect you will be able to see why we believe what worked multiple times in the past would work now. I also don't believe 4.1 billion for Acorn will do much for job creation what about a Frisbee golf coarse.
Iliminating the income tax, for starters. Letting people keep all of their paychecks. Cutting our $1 trillion a year overseas empire. Cutting down social programs. Cutting ineffective oversight and regulation. (Madoff got by SEC, for example.) Getting rid of the Federal Reserve, which artifically sets the interest rate and creates bubbles via over-distribution of credit. Legalizing marijuana. There are many things that could be done to help, besides printing our money into worthlessness. If spending is the cure, why are we still getting bailouts and stimulus packages when the Fed's interest rate is damn near zero? Liberals don't seem to understand how deficit spending works. We are in a downward spiral of creating debt to pay off debt. It can only end with the destruction of our currency.
Tax cuts would motivated companies to keep their doors open because they would be seeing more of their profits, therefore keeping business alive, keeping jobs. You need to support the private sector because that's where alot of jobs are created. Government jobs are temporary. Once they run out of money to fund these jobs we'll be back to square A.
Most conservatives on here havn't even read any of this bill, I have learned that tonight
Free money for people who MATTER, the already wealthy. Tax dollars for banking executive bonuses! It has never happened before, but maybe a few bucks might trickle down to the people who really don;t matter very much. NOTHING for the liberal middle and working classes, they voted for OBAMA.
Something that encourages increased production and GDP. Taking the money out of one pocket (the producing pocket) and inefficiently putting it back into the other pocket, is not stimulus. It's just moving money around, while taking it out of the working economy. It will fail. The Democrats are busy dancing and tipping the band while the ship they are on is headed to the bottom. And this is after axing the lifeboats because they think this ship can't sink. I wonder if the first splash of cold water will wake them up. Probably not.
