What's wrong with the public school system?
-
I've seen a few people here in the politics section blast the public school system. I know it's not perfect, nothing is. I went to elementary school in a small town in Georgia during the 80's. It was a small old school with lots of kids. The teachers were overwhelmed to say the least. Today my kids go to a new school about 10miles away from my old one. It has several computers in every classroom, great teachers, and there's like 15 kids in every class. My son is in 3rd grade and learning the same stuff I was tought in 5th grade. I think the school system has improved tremendously. I really don't see how it could be improved (besides paying the teachers more). So, what's with all the snobbery? Is it because you feel you shouldn't pay taxes for it, and/or do you honestly believe the public school system education is not comparable to a private school system education?

The 1954 U.S. Supreme Court decision in the Brown v. Topeka Board of Education case.
Great, great question. So the body of goverment that gives us this current education system also wants to control our healthcare.
People like to generalize about such things. The fact of the matter is that some public schools are better than others. And what I would like to know is why they think that private schools are so superior, since they obviously didn't help Dubya much.:)
Every thing fails under multiculturalism, Schools have gone down hill sense 1954. Crime rates have sky-rocked sense open housing laws. With Early mankind those with like interest gravitated together and the arts flourished song dance literature etc.
It comes from two directions: those who don't want to pay for it and those who know the government often hurts the education process as much as helps it. There are those who think public schools shouldn't exist. After all parents should have to work for the right to send their children to school. It is a poor attitude but a well known conservative one. Then the other side is more complex. Teachers are expected to jump through hoops for the first few years at any new school. They are salaried and expected to take on many hours of work outside of school hours and school days. It is not uncommon for a teacher to put in 90 hours or more in a week during many weeks in a school year. All for lower pay. (Keep in mind that I'm in Wisconsin. A teacher trained in Wisconsin can teach in any state, but some teachers trained in other states have to have additional education to get hired in Wisconsin.) Then there are standardizing tests that take up school time. They don't help. But governments insist on them for "proof". Then the lecture method itself is badly flawed. It is a simple fact on most subjects that if you sit a bunch of students in a circle and have them collectively try to answer questions from a text book, they will learn more than having 15 students stare blankly at a teacher scribbling on the board, and then requiring them to memorize some of what the teacher said afterward.
I went to private school till 8th grade. I spent high school in public school. I should have dropped out after 8th grade got a GED and went to college if I could have instead of attending public high school. Private schools operate at half the cost per student and do a much better job of educating. Government indoctrination institutions are a joke.
My wife is a teacher and this is what she says: What's wrong: 1. Parents, at a recent teacher/parent conference she had 3 parents out of 21 kids show up. 2. School boards with bad priorities: She has to teach children with no supplies what so ever. My wife pays for books, paper, pencils, notbooks etc...we just spent $1800 of our money to start school. Her budget the board gave her this year was $50 for the YEAR! 3. Bad Parents 4. Bad Parents 5. Bad Parents oh...then there's the Bad Parents
You've obviously never been to an elementary school in urban New York, or Washington State. Not everything is as rosy as your nice little school in rural Georgia.
Nothing that wouldn't be fixed if parents took responsibility for their children.
