Where is the best station (navy) to PCS in italy?ould you like to ask?

  • we are eyeing to PCS in italy after my hubby's (he's E8) tour in virginia in jan2012, so as early as now, we are really researching and any intel that we might need. my questions are: 1. where is the best naval station in italy? I heard there are 4, but our fist choice is naples..is it really good over there? in terms of housing, transpo, schools, employment etc? 2. which is better to live on or off base? 3. if off base? how much the rent costs? i need 2 rooms, is it practical to rent an apt or a house? 4. how much is the OHA? is it enough to cover the rent? do we have COLA too? 5. and lastly, is it easy to find an employment for me? thank you very much

Sigonella NAS in Sicily A lot of folks live off base but there is a dependent side with schools, housing, etc.. Don't know your money questions anymore. Too long ago. Employment may be tough for you at any base in Italy because they are contracted to hire locals as part of the base agreements.

housing you may not have any options at all.. most of the time they make you live on base if it is available. they WILL stick to the Bedroom allotment: one for the SM& Spouse. Kids are broken down: all under 6 share no matter what gender. same gender under 12 will share and 12 and up get their own room. OHA will only cover what they say you need.. there is a rental ceiling and you cannot go over it. they don't care that you want something bigger.. plus homes overseas tend to be smaller overall than American ones sq. footage wise. OHA is the exact amount of rent up to the ceiling. COLA fluctuates monthly and is based on the conversion rate of the Euro. there is a seperate allowance for utltities that will NOT cover all of the costs most likely. Employment will be very hard.. most on base jobs are reserved for host Nationals. you have almost no eligibility to work off base .
